Mainstream cloud storage scans uploaded files, fingerprints them, hands them over on subpoena. Self-host on CIS hardened iron removes both the scanning surface and the cross-border legal-process surface.

High-bandwidth file distribution sits on the same iron — torrents, direct-download nodes, archive mirrors. No customer-side file scanning, no fingerprinting, no third-party content-indexer in the trail. Storage uplinks are 1-10 Gbps depending on tier.

FAQ.
Nextcloud or Seafile?
Nextcloud for calendar / contacts / collaborative editing on top of files. Seafile for raw sync — leaner, faster, smaller resource footprint. FileBrowser for single-user setups.
Client-side end-to-end encryption?
Yes. Nextcloud E2EE plugin, Cryptomator on top of any backend. Paranoid setup: Cryptomator + Nextcloud means the server only ever sees ciphertext.
Storage scaling beyond a single box?
Mount a separate dedicated tier over WireGuard from the application server. Sync performance is essentially unchanged. Multi-TB setups fit on DS Pro or DS Beast (8+ TB NVMe).
Operator-side file scanning?
None. No crawl, no mirror, no fingerprint. Abuse triage is reactive on substantiated complaints and never predictive.
Can sharing public links from Nextcloud trigger a takedown?
Operator processes only legally-binding requests from courts of competent jurisdiction in the procured-infrastructure jurisdictions. Substantiated complaints with specific identifiers go through standard escalation.
